What does Jesus mean by destroying the soul in Matthew 10:28?

Let’s start by looking at the text, “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28 ESV).

The Greek word used for soul is “psuche” and it is more often translated as “life” than as soul. Jesus said in Matthew 16:25 “Whosover will lose his life (psuche) for my sake shall find it.”

The bigger picture of the text is clearly that we ought not to be afraid of our temporal bodies being destroyed but our eternal life being destroyed. The use of the word psuche in the text means not just life but eternal life.

(The bigger question in Matthew 10:28, for me, is that Jesus implies that a person can be destroyed in hell. Not to mention that Jesus also gives no acknowledgment to a soul as being immortal as was commonly assumed by many influenced by Greek philosophers like Plato.)
